Learn Portuguese: Book-lists for January Intermediate Portuguese Classes!

Hi Elena,
I have a co-worker that is looking for a textbook for 2nd year Portuguese classes at the University of California. If you have some suggestions we would appreciate it. We are looking for some material for Winter and Spring classes.

Tudo bem? For the 2nd year, you could adopt any of these fine textbooks from Brazil:

Novo Avenida Brasil 2 Book + CD , Novo Avenida Brasil 3 Book + CD or Portugues Via Brasil Livro-texto (CD is sold separately)
PANORAMA BRASIL – INTERMEDIARIO/AVANCADO is also great, but it’s more aimed at students working in the business world.

Alternatively, depending on the content you want to cover in the course, you could put together something with Brazilian fiction or non-fiction books and a grammar book, like Portugues Descomplicado. I am happy to help you put together a book-list, and one great way to go would be to pair Portugues Descomplicado with Ao Redor do Mundo: Leituras em Português which has many interesting readings about the Portuguese-speaking world (Brazil-heavy, but with some articles on Mozambique, Angola, Guiné-Bissau, & Portugal). Or, for a class in Brazilian literature, perhaps some Machado de Assis titles including Missa do Galo e Outros Contos (3 contos also available as audio-livros for download). I’ve also got some lists of books for classes on Brazilian tropicalia & protest music, perhaps paired with Ruben Fonseca’s wonderful historical fiction/detective mystery “Agosto”. It really depends on what topics you want to address!
