Learn Portuguese: European Portuguese Books for Younger Students

I went to Newark, New Jersey, to the Education and Portuguese Language Fair at the end of March. What a fun day we had in Portuguese! It inspired me to blog about books for younger kids who are learning Portuguese.  These are great young adult and kids books in Portuguese.

Most of these are from Portugal, but a few are from Brazil. Here are some Portuguese books for K-12 Portuguese learners and readers.

For very young children:
The kids in Newark especially liked “Está na Hora do Bacio!” (Time to Potty! Book with textures, like “Pat the Bunny”!) “O Livro do Tigre” (The Tiger Book), “Monstrecos em Casa” (Little Critters at Home) and story-books featuring the Turma da Mônica, from Brazil. Some more “easy-readers” for children include: A ARARA CANTORA, A minhoca, Um Dia de Neve & A Bruxa do Castelo (2 Stories in 1 book), A ema de sorte, O Cavalo Orgulhoso e o Burro de Carga & A Vida das Cegonhas (2 stories in 1 book).

Simple chapter-books in Portuguese:
I recommend the Teodora books, especially since the author, Luisa Fortes da Cunha (from Portugal) has been visiting schools in the Northeastern US and Canada this month. The Teodora books are similar to Harry Potter–they are a fantasy series about a young fairy, Teodora, whose adventures take her from Portugal to the Azores, and around the world to save us from the forces of evil!Check out Teodora e o Mistério do Vulcão (Teodora comes to the USA) and Teodora e o Livro dos Feitiços (Teodora in Brazil)!

Portuguese 2nd Language Textbooks for Children:

Learn Portuguese: Meu Pé de Laranja Lima

O escritor José Mauro de Vasconcelos, nasceu no Rio de Janeiro em 26 de fevereiro de 1920, de origem pobre, quando era criança chegou a viver com alguns tios na cidade de Natal, no Rio Grande do Norte.

Já crescido, por dois anos, cursou Medicina na capital potiguar, porém resolveu abandonar o curso esperando encontrar melhores oportunidades na sua cidade natal. Quando retornou ao Rio de Janeiro exerceu funções diversas, de boxer a carregador de frutas. Sua vida nunca foi fácil e com muitos sonhos na cabeça, mudou-se para São Paulo. Começou sua vida em Sampa como garçom de boate e trabalhou em outras áreas.

Passou um período viajando em muitos países da Europa e ganhou uma bolsa de estudos na Espanha até ganhar uma bolsa de estudos na Espanha. Retornando ao Brasil, trabalhou com os irmãos Villas-Boas e, juntos, exploraram até então muito pouco conhecida região do Araguaia, que inspirou a temática para o primeiro livro que ele escreveu: “Banana Brava” (1942), lançando quando ele tinha apenas 22 anos.

José Mauro Vasconcelos viveu em muitos lugares bem distintos, exerceu diversas profissões muito diferentes e, diante disso, conheceu muitas culturas e os tipos mais variados de pessoas. Demonstrando ser muito sensível, desenvolveu um estilo de escrita simples e emotiva, que atinge profundamente o leitor

É um escritor respeitado, conhecido e valorado muito mais em outros países do que no Brasil e consta em listas de escritores brasileiros mais lidos no exterior. Seus livros foram traduzidos para o alemão, inglês, espanhol, francês, italiano, japonês e holandês, entre outras línguas.

O livro “Meu pé de Laranja Lima”, foi o seu maior sucesso editorial e inspirou adaptações para uma novela de televisão e filme para o cinema. Vendeu em seus primeiros meses de lançamento, 217 mil exemplares, e foi inspirado em suas próprias experiências pessoais ao retratar os choques que ele sofreu na infância com as mudanças bruscas na sua vida. Além de “Meu Pé de Laranja Lima”, muitos outros de seus livros ganharam versões cinematográficas.

No livro “Meu pé de Laranja Lima,” a pobreza, a solidão e o desajuste social são vistos pelos olhos ingênuos de uma criança de seis anos. Nascido em uma família pobre e numerosa, Zezé é um menino especial, que envolve o leitor ao revelar seus sonhos e desejos, por meio de conversas com o seu pé de laranja lima, encontrando na fantasia a alegria de viver.

O mercado editorial brasileiro perdeu um grande e sensível escritor com a morte de José Mauro de Vasconcelos no dia 25 de julho de 1984.

Meet Elena Como (who writes this blog?)

Elena Como is passionate about Brazil, Portugal, and the Portuguese language. She is from the San Francisco Bay Area in California. As a teen, Elena discovered capoeira–a Brazilian martial. The experience learning capoeira inspired her to seek out a Portuguese class when she started college at UC Santa Cruz.

In Santa Cruz, Elena studied Brazilian Portuguese with Ana Maria Seara. Elena came to love Brazilian literature and culture. She especially enjoyed reading books in Portuguese, like the contos de Machado de Assis (short stories), novels by Jorge Amado and Rubem Fonseca and other great works of Brazilian fiction. She was very fortunate to be a student of UC Santa Cruz’s Brazilianists: Sonia Alvarez, Daniel Linger, and Karen Yamashita. At UC Santa Cruz, Elena worked with other Portuguese students in a weekly bate-papo, Portuguese language chat group. She tutored Portuguese and mathematics students. Elena spent one year in Rio de Janeiro as an exchange student (through the University of California’s Education Abroad Program) at PUC Rio de Janeiro in 2001. Her Portuguese improved by leaps and bounds and she truly came to adore Brazil and Brazilian culture. Elena holds degrees in Brazilian Studies and Mathematics.

After moving to New York in 2003, Elena founded Atlantico Book Importer. Through Atlantico, Elena shares her passion for Portuguese with others who are outside of the Portuguese-speaking world. Elena’s mission through Atlantico Books is to help others to experience cultural understanding and broadening of horizons through the study of Portuguese and through getting to know Brazil and Portugal.

In October of 2009, Elena participated in the First Conference on Brazilian Women Writers in New York City. She also participated in the International Conference on the Teaching of the Portuguese Languages and Cultures in North America (Congresso Internacional de Ensino da Língua e Culturas Portuguesas na América do Norte) in August of 2010. She was at the American Portuguese Studies Asssociation conference at Brown University in October of 2010 and the American Association of Teachers of Spanish & Portuguese annual conference in Washington DC in July of 2011, with the Instituto Camões (from Portugal). Elena Como co-organized the first Portuguese language bookfair at UMass Dartmouth in July of 2011. She is a frequent guest at Portuguese classes and Brazilian Meetups in New York City, in the Northeastern USA, and across the country.

Atlantico Books is also a publisher. In 2009 Atlantico released its first book, Missa do Galo e Outros Contos Vol. 1, and in 2011 Elena Como editted & published Ao Redor do Mundo: Leituras em Português, Vol. 1 with many collaborating authors and Portuguese professors, and with Atlantico Books.

Learn Portuguese: Read Twilight in Portuguese!

Did you know all the Twilight books are available from Portugal? . Even though I am a lover of Brazilian and Portuguese literature, every once in a while it’s fun to read a book that is simple and doesn’t challenge my Portuguese vocabulary too much, so why not read some vampire fantasy in Portuguese?!

Learn Portuguese: Education & Portuguese Language Fair in Newark WAS GREAT!

Yesterday, March 31st 2012, was the Feira de Educação e Língua Portuguesa, Education and Portuguese Language Fair at East Side High School, in Newark, New Jersey. It was a fun and educational day for Portuguese teachers, Portuguese students, parents of children who learn Portuguese and other members of the Portuguese-speaking communities of the Northeast. We gathered to share ideas about the learning and teaching of Portuguese. The event was hosted by the Consulate General of Portugal. The Portuguese Consulate threw this event to encourage the local Portuguese-American communities in New Jersey and nearby in their educational endeavors–focusing on encouraging young people to learn the Portuguese language.

The organizers and presenters included leaders from the Instituto Camões, including Dr. Fernanda Costa who came up from Washington DC, Dr Maria Amélia Paiva and Paula Seca from the Portuguese Consulate in Newark, Portuguese teachers from the Elizabeth Public Schools and the Newark Schools,  East Side High School, the Spanish and Portuguese Department at Rutgers, Newark, and many others.

I was there with a table of books in Portuguese, representing Atlantico Books. The Portuguese teachers and professors were especially interested in books like Gramática Átiva 1 and 2, which are excellent for learning Portuguese grammar, and Salpicos 2 (Portuguese as a foreign language, for children) and Entre Nós: Português para Hispano-Falantes (Portuguese for Spanish-Speakers). There were lots of families at the feira, and many children and teens. Some of the books the kids liked were “O Livro do Tigre” (The Tiger Book), “Está na Hora do Bacio!” (Time to Potty!) and “Monstrecos em Casa” (Little Critters at Home) and Turma da Mônica, from Brazil. The teens especially liked the Teodora books, which are by Luísa Fortes da Cunha (a Portuguese author, who will be on-tour at American schools next week!), Harry Potter in Portuguese, and Twighlight in Portuguese. Some Portuguese-Americans came by to check out “Os Lusíadas”, the epic tale by Camões.

One of many highlights of the day was finally meeting my online-friend Adam Mahler. Adam is a junior in high school, and he lives in Bedford, New York. His high school doesn’t offer Portuguese, but because Adam has a great interest in Portuguese language and culture, he started a foreign languages club at his school, and takes Portuguese lessons with a private teacher, outside of school. Adam had a great time in Newark, meeting the many Portuguese educators and practicing his Portuguese with so many native-speakers. He is going to Lisbon this summer for the first time, to take a Portuguese class and get to know a bit of Portugal. Adam and I are similar because neither of us has Portuguese-speaking ancestry, but we both love learning Portuguese. It is a pleasure to watch his journey into the Lusophone world, as I reflect on my own journey into Brazil and the study of Portuguese, and how it all began for me.

For me, the Newark Feira de Educação e Língua Portuguesa was a wonderful day to meet fellow lovers of Portuguese. I always enjoy the opportunity to practice my Portuguese. Many many thanks to the Consulate General of Portugal for hosting and for inviting Atlantico Books to this event!

Learn Portuguese: Differences between Brazilian Portuguese and European Portuguese

Is there any major difference between Brazilian Portuguese and European Portuguese?

There are a lot of differences! Here’s an explanation of some of the differences between Brazilian Portuguese and European Portuguese. Enjoy!

**Use of the infinitive vs. the gerund **

I’m working
Portugal: Estou a trabalhar
Brazil: Estou trabalhando

I’m writing
Portugal: Estou a escrever
Brazil: Estou escrevendo

Both forms are understood in Brazil and Portugal, but while Brazilian form is used in certain regions of Portugal and is considered correct in some situations all over the country, the Portuguese form is not used in Brazil. Both of them are correct.

***Position of object pronouns ***

Someone told me
Portugal: Alguém disse-me
Brazil: Alguém me disse

Someone saw me
Portugal: Alguém viu-me
Brazil: Alguém me viu

Both forms are understood in Brazil and Portugal, but while Brazilian form is used in Portugal in some situations, the Portuguese form is not used in Brazil. Both of them are correct.

***Tu/Você (=you, singular) ***

Portugal
Tu: For someone we know and have confidence with (brother, friend, parents..)- informal
Você: People older than us that we don’t know that well (teachers, our parents’ friends..) – formal

Brazil
Tu: informal (only used in some regions)
Você: formal/informal

“Você” is conjugated like 3rd person, singular
“Tu” is conjugated like 2rd person, singular (in Brazil, it’s like 3rd person, singular, which is not correct – informal)

***Preposition “em” ***

Brazil
They have a choice of contracting or not the prepositions “em” followed by an indefinite article, adjective or pronoun

em este / neste
em outro / noutro

Portugal
Portuguese people generally opts for the contracted forms

noutro

***Articles (o,a,os,as – the) ***

In Portugal they use them very often and it’s not so correct to omit them unlike Brazilians who have a choice of omitting them or not.

Brazil: Meu nome é José

When my father…
Portugal: Quando o meu pai…
Brazil: Quando meu pai..

***Vocabulary ***

Brazilian has been influenced by Amerindian languages, such as Tupian, or Tupí-Guaraní, which was the language used by the natives. Brazil has also accepted more US technical terms into the language On the other hand, European Portuguese was influenced by French (because of the French invasions). Phonetically Brazilian Portuguese is closer to Spanish and Italian and European Portuguese is closer to Catalan and French.

English: pineapple, mouse (computer), screen, baby bottle, pantyhose, train, chiclet, nylon, sandwich

Portugal: ananás, rato, ecrã (Fr. écran), biberão (Fr. biberon), colãs (Fr. collants – they always say/write the french word, not colãs which is the most correct), comboio, pastilha elástica, nylon, sandes

Brazil: abacaxi, mouse, tela, mamadeira, meias-calças, trem, chiclete, náilon, sanduíche

** -c, -p ** Portugal conserves more latin roots:

English: optimum/eminently good, actor, act, fact…
Portugal: óptimo, actor, acto, facto…
Brazil: ótimo, ator, ato, fato…

**accent**
European portuguese is phonetically closer to Catalan and French while Brazilian Portuguese is phonetically closer to Spanish and Italian.

Brazil: djia, Brásiu, fálá, dizê
