Há muito tempo a comunidade brasileira e de amigos do Brasil em San Antonio, Texas,
Equipe da BESA no Consulado do Brasil
pensa em ter uma organização que seja a representante pública da comunidade, e também uma maneira de divulgar, promover, e celebrar o Brasil nos EUA. Desde 2003 existe o BESA (Brasileiros em San Antonio), uma organização informal que promove comemorações, reuniões, passeios e, desde, fevereiros de 2011, atividades para as crianças, como a Hora do Conto! Em julho de 2011, formou-se a Casa do Brasil em San Antonio, uma organização oficial, sem fins lucrativos. A ideia é de construir sobre os alicerces providos pelo BESA e ir adiante. Uma das primeiras iniciativas da BESA é de criar um acervo de literatura infantil brasileira, a ser mantido na rede de bibliotecas da cidade de San Antonio. E já na primeira parte de 2012 vão ter outras atividades culturais. Agora com status oficial, a CABRASA tem muitos planos, e conta com o apoio da comunidade para realizá-los!

Learn Portuguese: MeetUps (Encontros Presenciais) para Alunos de Português
Bate-Papo com Chocolate 4/2011
O mundo online está cheio de recursos para alunos e professores de português, mas para realmente aprender português e aprender sobre as culturas lusófonas, não há nada tão bom como um encontro “ao vivo” com outras pessoas que também querem falar português. Uma plataforma que é muito popular para instigar mais encontros “vivos” é o website MeetUp. Meetup é um website que oferece milhares de “comunidades” para você conseguir se encontrar com outras pessoas que gostam das mesmas atividades que você gosta. Existem clubes do livro, grupos para praticar o português, e grupos que assistem filmes brasileiros. Vou falar um pouco de como se pode utilizar MeetUp com alunos de português.
Um MeetUp tem sempre algum tema, e no caso dos MeetUps para estudar português, normalmente o tema é que todo mundo comunica somente em português. Eu já fui a filmes brasileiros com um grupo, aqui em Nova Iorque, e depois do filme batemos papo sobre o enredo, as personagens, ou qualquer outro assunto relacionado. Outro programa divertido é visitar um restaurante brasileiro ou português e bater papo em português enquanto se experimenta as comidas e bebidas típicas brasileiras ou portuguesas. No círculo do livro, um grupo de brasileiros, portugueses, e alunos de português se reunem cada mes em Manhattan para conversar sobre um romance em português. Já limos Olhai os Lírios do Campo (de Erico Verissimo) e outros romances muito bons, como A Paixão Segundo G.H. de Clarice Lispector.

Em julho fui a um encontro com o grupo fabuloso em Nova Iorque, Come Speak Brazilian Portuguese With Us! que é carinhosamente organizada por Cristhiane Vieira-Rozenblit, da Brazil Ahead, em Manhattan. Este encontro foi Picnic + Portuguese conversation in Central Park = fun! Junto com a Brazil Ahead, Atlantico Books também ajudou a dar este picnic. Chegou uma turma super-animada, pronta para falar muito portguês! Tivemos alunos de português de muitos níveis diferentes, e até alguns “alunos formados” como eu! A Cristhiane tinha preparado muitas atividades divertidas para o grupo, e algumas professoras que trabalham com ela na Brazil Ahead, Marcia Winger e Gleice Andrade, ajudaram muito. Eu gostei muito da leitura que fizemos. Eu tinha preparado uns materiais para compartilhar– um artigo chamado Meio Bugre, do novo livro Ao Redor do Mundo: Leituras em Português Vol. 1 (Atlantico Books, 2011). O artigo conta uma história verdadeira da infancia da escritora e narradora, Eva P. Bueno, brasileira do Estado de Paraná, que hoje em dia trabalha na Universidade de St. Mary’s em San Antonio, no Texas. Em Meio Bugre, ela conta sobre a rotina do pai dela, de chegar todo dia em casa depois do trabalho e cantar música caipira com Eva, quando eva tinha 5 ou 6 anos de idade. O pai dela tocava cavaquinho, e além de cantar, também gostava muito de contar histórias. E na segunda metade de Meio Bugre, o pai da Eva conta uma história super-interessante: uma lenda da família. Ele explica que a avó dele era indigena de uma tribo que foi massacrada pelo bisavô do pai da Eva. Depois das atividades, Todd Conatser, um ator, músico e estudante de português, cantou umas canções bonitas de Tom Jobim & Vinicius de Moraes, incluindo 2 lindas canções de Orfeu Negro, “Manhã” e “A Felicidade.”
Nos MeetUps que temos aqui em Nova Iorque, para alunos de português, sempre há muita conversa, muita diversão, e até novas amizades!
Learn Portuguese: Summer Program in Portuguese at UMass Dartmouth

Last Thursday, I sat in on Greg Dillon’s Brazilian literature class at UMass Dartmouth, which he teaches at the UMass Summer Program in Portuguese. Greg is from Astoria, Queens (where I live!) and he studied at the University of Connecticut. He’s doing his MA at UMass Dartmouth, and teaching this summer in the Portuguese Program.
His students were presenting their research about different aspects of Brazilian culture. There was a great presentation about the Brazilian Landless Movment, o Movimento Sem Terra, examining both sides of the issue. Anne Huber discussed the point of view of land-owners, while Sabine Parrish spoke about the goals and ideals of the “settlers” in the Landless movement. I really appreciated the obvious energy & passion that both Huber & Parrish put into their presentation, giving a very objective presentation. Their thesis was that there needs to be more academic research, more transparency, because the different sides each use their own statistics to show that the movement is good or bad.

The other students presented their research on the Iberian Inquisition, Paulo Freire and his work in education (and book “Pedagogy of the Oppressed) and issues of class and gender in Brazilian cinema (and Brazilian culture).
It was nice to meet the Portuguese students at UMass Dartmouth, who study Portuguese language & Portuguese & Brazilian culture at the UMass Summer Program in Portuguese. I’ve been watching their facebook page, and they sure do a lot of great activities, like visiting local Portuguese restaurants, catching live Brazilian music, and lots of other Portuguese-related adventures in Massachusetts.
What a beautiful place to spend a summer, and what a great way to learn Portuguese!

I’m at the book fair now! 
People are here from Massachusetts and Rhode Island, mainly. There are Portuguese teachers, students, and other lovers of Portuguese. Some are parents who want their children to learn Portuguese.
Today I got to visit the beautiful beach at Fairhaven (20 min away) before stopping by the Center for Portuguese Studies. The Center is also participating in the book fair, selling some of their great anthologies about different aspects of Portuguese, Portuguese American, Brazilian, and Luso-African culture. Great books for anyone who wants to learn more about these cultures (and most of the books are in English too).
It was really nice to meet some of the Portuguese students who are here, at UMass Dartmouth, studying Portuguese language & Portuguese & Brazilian culture this summer, in the UMass Summer Program in Portuguese. I’ve been watching their facebook page, and they sure do a lot of great activities, like visiting local Portuguese restaurants, catching live Brazilian music, and lots of other Portuguese-related adventures in Massachusetts. We’re watching the movie “Two Drifters” which is from Portugal. The director, Joao Pedro Rodrigues, is here, and he will host Q&A after the movie. The movie is very engaging–the story of a young Portuguese man who dies in a car accident, leaving behind a grieving boyfriend, and a pretty young neighbor who becomes obsessed with his death.

Wednesday’s feira do livro will run alongside a showing of the movie “Two Drifters” (2005, from Portugal) which starts at 5pm. Directed by João Pedro Rodrigues. This film will be preceded by a brief introduction by the director, and followed by an open discussion.

Learn Portuguese: Portuguese Language Picnic in NYC!
Yesterday I had a blast in Central Park with friends from the meetup Come Speak Brazilian Portuguese With Us!

Yesterday’s event was called Picnic + Portuguese conversation in Central Park = fun! We met in Central Park, on the Upper East Side. The picnic was organized by Cristhiane Vieira-Rozenblit, from Brazil Ahead, who started us off with some fun “getting to know you” activities in Portuguese, to make sure that everyone practiced their Portuguese.
We played a game of “teia de aranha” (spider-web) to break the ice. You introduce yourself briefly when someone throws you the ball of string, and then you throw it to someone else, eventually forming a spiderweb of new friends! Then Cris told us a riddle in Portuguese.
Next, we divided into 3 groups, in order to have some other activities. I led a reading group, which read Eva Bueno’s story, Meio Bugre, from the book Ao Redor do Mundo: Leituras em Português.

I love this story, because it’s all about Eva’s childhood in Brazil and her family’s history living in the interior of the state of Paraná. It’s a beautiful story about a little girl and her father, the songs they would sing together, and the story he once told her, about how her great grandmother may have been an indigenous Brazilian.
It’s a fascinating story and a great examination & analysis of Brazilian culture, and especially Brazilian racial identity. I recommend the book, and this article in particular, to Portuguese students who are interested in Brazilian culture.
Finally, we sang some Brazilian music with Todd Conatser, who brought his guitar. Todd is an accomplished musician, and it was so much fun to sing some of my favorite old Bossa Nova tunes, like “Manhã” and “A Felicidade” by Tom Jobim & Vinicius de Moraes.

There were brownies, chips with salsa & guacamole, and guaraná. It was a beautiful, summer afternoon in Central Park and a wonderful conversation in Portuguese. I hope to repeat this Portuguese language picnic, sposored by Atlantico Books and Brazil Ahead, sometime very soon.

The Americas Society hosts a whole lot of Latin American events, and I’ve been to some great ones, like the visit from the acclaimed Brazilian novelist Nélida Piñon and the prolific Brazilian movie director,Carlos Diegues along with actress Zezé Motta. That was such a kick–I love his movies and she was great in them!

Learn Portuguese: “Paulinho da Viola: My Time is Now”
I saw another great Brazilian movie at the 92Y Tribeca, in Manhattan, “Paulinho da Viola: My Time is Now.” (Paulinho da Viola – Meu Tempo é Hoje) The 92Y shows a lot of great films, but I wouldn’t have found out about this one if it weren’t for my friend, Aparecida Teixeira‘s Meetup. I recommend “Paulinho da Viola: My Time is Now” as well as “O Mistério do Samba” (The Mystery of Samba) for anyone who wants to learn more about Brazilian music, listen to some beautiful music and learn Brazilian Portuguese.
“Paulinho da Viola: My Time is Now” tells the story of Paulinho’s life. He’s a famous and extremely well-loved Brazilian guitar and cavaquinho-player from Rio de Janeiro. In the movie, we see him in many different contexts: with his friends from the Velha Guarda da Portela (“old guard” of the Portela Samba School), with Marisa Monte, and with Zeca Pagodinho, and other contemporary peers like Marina Lima and Elton Medeiros. There are also some lovely scenes of him playing and singing with his children and with his father and his son, who both play beautiful Brazilian classical guitar. We get to learn more about Paulinho da Viola and his family life: growing up how he always loved to tinker with things and would have made a great mechanic. The neighbors reminisce about Paulinho the daydreamer and Paulinho the tinkerer: always taking apart clocks and other devices.
“Paulinho da Viola: My Time is Now” reminded me a lot of “O Mistério do Samba: “The Mystery of Samba” is a beautiful documentary, directed by Lula Buarque de Hollanda and Carolina Jabor. The film tells the history behind the famous samba school Portela, in Rio de Janeiro. The best part is that you get to see and hear the old sambistas, the Velha Guarda da Portela, as they tell their own stories. Musicians Paulinho da Viola, Zeca Pagodinho, and Marisa Monte worked together to make O Mistério do Samba a great success. If you are learning Brazilian Portuguese, this movie is a must-see. You’ll pick up a ton of interesting vocabulary and Brazilian culture, and you can watch the DVD with Portuguese subtitles. The music is maravilhosa!
