Atlantico Books Portuguese Scholarship
Awarded to Students at University of Iowa
NEW YORK, NY – OCTOBER 11, 2010 – Atlantico Book Importer, Inc., which recently published its first novel - “Missa do Galo e Outros Contos, Vol. 1,” announces that two students will share its Portuguese Scholarship at the University of Iowa this academic year (2010-2011).
Students dividing the monetary award are Kara Marie Christie and Amanda Sue Arends, both minors in Portuguese who have shown a vested interest in learning the Portuguese language as well as the culture and literature of Portuguese-speaking countries, according to the University of Iowa Award Committee.
“We are really proud to be fostering interest in the Portuguese language and to be helping these students further their academic careers,” said Elena Como, owner of Atlantico Books.
Como founded Atlantico Books in New York, NY, after studying in Brazil as an exchange student in 2001 and after spending time in Portugal a few years ago.
“Those experiences changed my life,” Como said. “Now I’m just very happy to be helping students learn the Portuguese language and to be providing books from Brazil and Portugal to the rest of the world.”
Como’s company, which is located online at www.atlanticobooks.com, offers a wide variety of Portuguese textbooks, English-Portuguese dictionaries, and Brazilian Portuguese downloads.
Atlantico Books also recently published its first novel, “Missa do Galo e Outros Contos, Vol. 1” with collaboration from Portuguese professors from all over the USA as well as student-artists who provided beautiful illustrations for the book. Most other current titles listed on the company’s website are imported from Brazil or Portugal.
“I founded Atlantico Books because I am passionate about Brazil and the Portuguese language,” Como said. “I will always think of Rio as another ‘home,’ and when I finally made it to Portugal a few years ago, I fell in love with Lisbon as well. The scholarship and the offerings at www.atlanticobooks.com are my way of helping others fall in love with the Portuguese-speaking world.”

"Thank you all! I was an exchange student during my gap year in Portugal in 2007-2008, and am now expecting a child, whom I want to teach Portuguese, since I gained fluency during my year and wish to share that. It is incredibly difficult to find anything in this beautiful and useful language, because this country has not caught up to the need! Thank you for making it easier! Melhores!"
