This documentary explores the everyday life of the members of Velha Guarda da Portela, the legendary group of samba school players that holds the record for the most titles won in the carnival of Rio de Janeiro - and how this life becomes the inspiration for their beautiful songs. Guided by contemporary singer-songwriter Marisa Monte, who interviews many of the musicians, the film also delves into Velha Guarda's history, with Monte coaxing songs from the older musicians--many never recorded--that risked being forgotten. Sure to delight all music lovers, the film also features special appearances by contemporary stars Paulinho da Viola and Zeca Pagodinho.

We had a nice time at Valerie’s watching “O Misterio Do Samba”, the DVD Elena brought documenting the Portela Samba School in Rio. For me
there is nothing as charming and sentimental as hearing 80 year-old folks singing and dancing the music that IS their lives. Like The Buena Vista
Social Club, this music and dance is being documented and preserved for the next generation. It is wonderful that Brazilian modern singer Marisa
Monte has a love for tradition and has undertaken this enterprise with this film. For traditional musicians of any genre this is a movie you must

Wow, que filme lindo! O Misterio do Samba is a beautiful documentary. The cinematography is stellar, with lots of rich blues and whites, for Portela
samba school. The music is, of course, divine. I highly recommend this DVD to anyone who loves Brazilian music or teaches Brazilian Portuguese. It is
