"The CD that comes with this book is amazing! I'd never heard of Suely Mesquita, but as soon as I popped the CD into my CD-player, I became a fan of the Brazilian song-writer and composer. Her voice is sweet--it reminds me of Gal Costa. The songs on this CD are a mix of rock, samba, and MPB (Brazilian pop). The lyrics are fascinating, often telling a story of how Suely sees Brazilian society and her reactions to it. In "Samba de Branco," for instance, Suely writes: 

"samba de branco que o europeu comeu/e quem sou eu, afinal/o petisco ou o canibal no banquete do samba?" 

"that white samba eaten by Europeans/does it make me/the meal or cannibal at the feast?"

The songs tell interesting stories about Brazilian music, culture and race.

The book, "Sexo Puro:"A Life in Brazilian Song", is a biography of Suely's life, filled with engaging anecdotes, lively photos of the singer, and the lyrics (in Portuguese) alongside their translations into English and the stories behind each song. The prose is easy and entertaining, and this book was a pleasure to read."
